Fencing Forward

The Stories

The Point Fencing Club & School based in Urbana, Illinois plays a vital role in expanding access to athletic and educational opportunities for local youth. Through a strong partnership with the Urbana Park District, the club offers discounted seasonal fencing camps in the fall, spring, and summer—led by experienced board members and athletes from the University of Illinois Fencing Illini team. These programs introduce young people to the discipline and confidence-building sport of fencing in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Beyond regular classes, the club actively serves the community through free demonstrations and outreach events. Their coaches have led instructional sessions for groups such as the Girl Scouts (reaching more than 75 participants ages 5–18) and frequently visit local schools to inspire students through hands-on fencing experiences. These efforts help spark interest in the sport and create positive role models through direct interaction with collegiate athletes.

Currently serving 20 students, nearly half of whom participate at reduced rates, the club works tirelessly to remove financial barriers to participation. The standard cost of membership can be a challenge for many families, and this grant directly supports the club’s mission to make fencing more affordable, sustainable, and accessible in a smaller community.

This grant recognizes the club’s commitment to youth development, community engagement, and equitable access to sport—ensuring that more young people in Urbana can experience the confidence, discipline, and opportunity that fencing provides.
